About Handrails
A handrail is the graspable top rail of a balustrade system, running along the upper edge of railing posts or the top of a glass panel to provide a secure handhold.
The handrail profile sits on handrail supports or is fixed directly to the glass via a channel bar, and fittings at each joint — elbows, end caps and axial connectors — allow the rail to follow corners, stair pitches and direction changes.
Strofix supplies handrails and handrail components in two profile systems: a 40×40 mm flat square profile and a Ø42.4 × 15 mm oval (D-shaped) profile for glass-top mounting, both in AISI 304 stainless steel with a satin finish.
The range includes applied handrail lengths (2500 mm), channel bars in AISI 304 and aluminium for glass-top fixing, clamping rubbers for glass thicknesses from 8 to 21.52 mm, end caps, axial fastenings, handrail fittings, horizontal and vertical 90° fittings, and flush adjustable elbows.
The correct components depend on handrail profile, mounting method (post-top or glass-top) and the railing layout.
How to choose handrail components
1. Handrail profile: 40×40 mm flat or Ø42.4 × 15 mm oval
The 40×40 mm flat square profile matches Strofix 40×40 railing posts and square-section components for a geometric, angular railing system.
The Ø42.4 × 15 mm oval (D-shaped) profile is designed for glass-top mounting — the flat underside sits on the glass edge via a channel bar and clamping rubber, while the rounded top provides a comfortable grip.
Choose the profile that matches the post system and mounting method.
2. Mounting method: post-top or glass-top
Post-top mounting places the handrail on top of railing posts using handrail supports from the Handrail support category.
Glass-top mounting fixes the handrail directly to the upper edge of a glass panel using a channel bar and clamping rubber — the rubber grips the glass from both sides within the channel, holding the rail in place without drilling.
Glass-top mounting requires a channel bar, a clamping rubber matched to the glass thickness, and the corresponding oval-profile fittings.
3. Glass thickness for clamping rubbers (8–21.52 mm)
Clamping rubbers are available in thickness ranges to match the glass panel: 8–11.52 mm, 11.52–13.52 mm, 16.76–17.52 mm, and 20.76–21.52 mm.
The rubber must match the actual glass thickness precisely to ensure a secure grip.
Rubbers are supplied in 2500 mm and 5000 mm lengths — calculate the total handrail length and select accordingly.
4. Fittings: corners, ends and transitions
Horizontal 90° fittings join two handrail sections at a right-angle corner on a level run.
Vertical 90° fittings join level and stair-pitch sections where the railing changes angle.
Flush adjustable elbows (Ø42.4 × 15 only) allow fine-tuning of the angle on site.
End caps close the open end of the handrail at the start and finish of a run.
Axial handrail fastenings connect two straight sections end-to-end.
Identify all joint positions in the railing layout before ordering.
5. Channel bar material: AISI 304 or aluminium
Channel bars are available in AISI 304 stainless steel (2500 mm) and aluminium 1050 (3000 mm).
Stainless steel matches the handrail and fittings visually and structurally.
Aluminium is a lighter, cost-effective option where the channel is concealed inside the handrail profile and not visible.
