About Wire Rope Systems
A wire rope system is a stainless-steel cable infill for balustrades: horizontal ropes are tensioned between the railing posts to form a light, open infill that keeps the view and lets air through – for balconies, terraces and staircases.
Strofix supplies the components for a Ø3 mm rope system: AISI 316 wire rope sold by the metre, rope holders for intermediate posts (an M6 holder for 40 × 40 mm and Ø42.4 mm posts and a rope holder for Ø42.4 mm tube), eye anchors, tensioners 150–210 mm and 51 mm, M6 threaded terminals (left and right), rope stoppers and crimping pliers for the sleeves.
The rope, tensioners, terminals, eye anchors and stoppers are AISI 316; the rope holders are AISI 304. The correct set depends on the post profile, the number of rope runs and the length of the run.
How to choose wire rope system components
1. Rope length
The Ø3 mm rope is sold per metre. Multiply the span between the end posts by the number of rope runs and add length for tensioning and terminating at each end.
2. Rope holders at intermediate posts
Holders guide the rope at every intermediate post. The M6 rope holder fits 40 × 40 mm and Ø42.4 mm posts; the rope holder for Ø42.4 mm tube mounts directly onto a round post.
3. Anchoring and tensioning at the end posts
Each rope run needs an anchor and a tensioning point at its ends. A tensioner is pinned to an eye anchor screwed into the post; a threaded terminal passes through a hole in the post and is tightened with a nut; a stopper locks the tensioned rope against the post. Terminal sleeves are crimped onto the rope with the crimping pliers.
4. Steel grade
The rope and the tensioning parts are AISI 316, which resists chlorides better than AISI 304 – the choice near the sea, around outdoor pools or where de-icing salt is used. The rope holders are AISI 304.
