About heavy cast bases

A cast base is a heavier railing post base – thicker walled and with a larger contact area than an ordinary plate, so it takes a greater overturning moment.

In the Strofix catalogue these products are named railing post bases, and they come in two forms: raw for welding, and already satin-finished.

The raw versions are welded to the bottom of the post and finished together with the seam. The satin versions are a finished, visible part that needs no further work.

Both post profiles are covered – Ø42.4 mm round tube and 40x40 mm square profile. All variants are AISI 304 and non-adjustable.

The choice depends on post profile, whether the base will be welded or bolted, and whether it stays visible.

How to choose a heavy base

1. Post profile: Ø42.4 mm or 40x40 mm

The opening is profiled for a specific post. Round Ø42.4 mm and 40x40 mm square each have their own variant.

Confirm the post size before ordering – these bases are not universal.

2. Raw or satin

Choose raw when the post will be welded. After welding, clean the seam and finish the whole part at once.

Choose satin when the base stays visible as supplied – it saves finishing work on site.

3. When a heavy base is worth it

A standard 4 mm plate suits most residential balustrades.

Choose the heavier base for taller posts, public projects and high-traffic locations where people lean on the balustrade regularly.

4. Anchoring

Anchor type depends on the substrate – chemical or mechanical anchors for concrete, coach screws for timber.

Use stainless fixings with a stainless base so that galvanic corrosion does not start outdoors.
