About Base & Clamp Fastenings

A base or clamp fastening is a stainless-steel plate or bracket that anchors a railing post to the building structure, forming the structural foundation of the balustrade.

Bottom fastenings bolt to the top of a floor slab, deck or beam, while side fastenings bolt to the vertical face of a fascia, edge beam or wall.

Assembly clamps grip an existing tube or post without welding, and assembly plates provide a flat mounting surface for auxiliary connections.

Strofix supplies 18 base and clamp products for Ø42.4 mm round pipe and 40×40 mm flat-sided square posts, with plate diameters from Ø80 to Ø100 mm (round) and plate dimensions from 80×80 to 135×56 mm (rectangular/square), in satin or raw-surface stainless steel with AISI 304 and AISI 316 options.

Screw-hole configurations include 2, 3 and 4-hole variants.

The correct fastening depends on mounting orientation, post profile, plate size, number of screw holes and the required surface finish.

How to choose a base or clamp fastening

1. Mounting orientation: bottom, side or clamp

Bottom fastenings bolt to horizontal surfaces — floor slabs, decks and beams — and are the most common choice for terrace and balcony balustrades.

Side fastenings bolt to vertical surfaces — fascia panels, edge beams and walls — and are used where the post cannot be mounted from above.

Assembly clamps grip around an existing tube or post without drilling or welding, suited to temporary or non-destructive installations.

Assembly plates provide a flat surface for auxiliary connections.

Choose based on where and how the post will be attached.

2. Post profile: Ø42.4 mm round or 40×40 mm flat

Bottom fastenings are available for both Ø42.4 mm round pipe and 40×40 mm flat square posts.

Side fastenings and assembly clamps are available for Ø42.4 mm round pipe, and assembly clamps are also available for 40×40 mm flat posts.

The central hole or socket in the plate must match the post profile.

3. Plate size and shape

Plate dimensions determine the footprint of the base and how far the fixing bolts sit from the post centre.

Larger plates (Ø100, 100×100, 105×105 mm) provide a wider bolt spread for higher load capacity.

Smaller plates (80×80, 87×87 mm) have a more compact footprint where space is tight.

Side fastenings include 120×60 mm and other rectangular plates optimised for vertical mounting.

4. Number of screw holes (2 / 3 / 4)

More screw holes distribute the anchor load across a wider area and increase the pull-out resistance of the post base.

Two-hole bases suit lightweight or residential installations.

Three- and four-hole bases are used for commercial balustrades and higher-load applications.

Select based on the structural engineer's specification or the expected lateral load.

5. Surface finish: satin or raw

Satin-finish plates are used where the base is visible — for example, surface-mounted on a polished floor.

Raw-surface plates are intended for concealed installations where the base will be covered by a decorative cover plate from the Covers category, or where the plate is embedded in concrete or hidden behind cladding.
