About Post-Mounted Handrail Supports

A post-mounted handrail support is a stainless-steel fitting that sits on top of a railing post and holds the handrail in position, forming the connection between the vertical post structure and the horizontal (or inclined) rail that runs along the top.

The support transfers lateral grip loads from the handrail into the post and determines the angle at which the rail sits — fixed, adjustable or horizontal.

Strofix supplies 28 post-mounted handrail support products in two main types: handrail fittings with a stem (Ø12 or Ø14 mm) that inserts into the post tube, and handrail plates that sit flat on the post top.

Both types are available for Ø42.4 mm round pipe and 40×40 mm flat-sided square posts, with fixed 90°, adjustable, horizontal and corner 90° configurations, in AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel with satin or polished finishes.

Screwable and welding connection methods are available.

The correct support depends on post profile, handrail angle, connection method and position in the railing run.

How to choose a post-mounted handrail support

1. Post profile: Ø42.4 mm round or 40×40 mm flat

Each fitting and plate variant is profiled for a specific post type.

Round-pipe variants have a concave base or socket that sits on Ø42.4 mm tube posts; some plates also fit Ø48.3 mm.

Flat variants have a flat base for 40×40 mm square posts.

The support base must match the post it sits on — a round fitting will not sit flush on a flat post and vice versa.

2. Fitting type: stem fitting or plate

Stem fittings have a Ø12 or Ø14 mm pin that inserts into the open top of the post tube, providing a secure mechanical connection.

They are available in fixed 90°, adjustable and horizontal configurations.

Handrail plates are flat discs that sit on the post top and are welded or bonded in place — they provide a low-profile connection with no protruding stem.

Choose based on the preferred visual profile and whether a removable or permanent connection is needed.

3. Angle: fixed 90°, adjustable, horizontal or corner 90°

Fixed 90° fittings hold the handrail perpendicular to the post and are used on level balcony and terrace runs.

Adjustable fittings allow the angle to be set on site to follow stair pitches and non-standard gradients.

Horizontal fittings position the handrail parallel to the post axis — used where the rail runs alongside a post rather than on top of it.

Corner 90° fittings and plates are used where the railing turns a right-angle corner.

Identify all fitting positions along the run before ordering.

4. Connection method: screwable or welding

Screwable fittings use a set screw to lock the stem inside the post tube, allowing assembly and disassembly without welding equipment.

Welding fittings are permanently fused to the post for a seamless, rigid joint.

Most Strofix post-mount supports are screwable; a welding variant is available for applications where a weld joint is preferred.

5. Finish and steel grade

Satin is the standard finish across 22 of 28 products, with polished variants available on three products for a brighter appearance.

AISI 304 is the standard grade; AISI 316 is available on two variants for coastal and high-humidity installations.
