About Under-Supported Glass Canopies

An under-supported glass canopy is a wall-mounted entrance shelter in which diagonal steel brackets carry the glass panel from below, transferring load from the canopy back to the building façade.

The brackets project outward and downward from the wall, supporting the glass without any overhead tie-rods or hanging hardware, which makes this mounting style suited to entrances where a clean soffit and unobstructed overhead clearance are required.

Strofix supplies under-supported glass canopy brackets in S355 structural steel and stainless steel, with projection depths from 900 to 1300 mm, in black, anthracite and brown finishes.

Complete canopy kits on 2, 3 or 4 supports are available with laminated toughened glass (66.2 or 88.2) in widths from 1400 to 3800 mm, and loose glass panels can be ordered separately with or without drilled holes.

Choosing the correct configuration depends on canopy width, projection depth, glass thickness and colour preference.

How to choose an under-supported glass canopy

1. Canopy width (number of supports)

The total glass width determines how many bracket supports are needed.

Strofix offers kits on 2 supports for widths from approximately 1400–1600 mm, 3 supports for widths around 2000–2100 mm, and 4 supports for widths from approximately 2600–2700 mm and above.

For wider spans, additional supports distribute load more evenly across the glass.

2. Projection depth (bracket reach)

Projection depth is how far the canopy extends from the wall.

Strofix brackets are available in four depth ranges: 900–1050 mm, 1000 mm, 1100–1300 mm and 1200 mm.

Measure the required rain and wind coverage area at the entrance, then select the bracket depth that provides adequate shelter without exceeding the structural capacity of the wall fixing.

3. Glass thickness and type

Three glass options are available: 10 mm toughened, 12.76 mm laminated toughened (66.2) and 16.76 mm laminated toughened (88.2).

Thicker laminated glass is heavier and more impact-resistant — choose it for larger spans or locations with high wind or snow loads.

Glass panels can be ordered with pre-drilled holes (for bolt-through bracket attachment) or without holes (for clamp-style fixing).

4. Bracket material

Most brackets are made from S355 structural steel with a painted finish, which provides high load capacity at a lower cost.

A stainless steel bracket variant is also available where corrosion resistance and a metallic appearance are preferred — for example, coastal environments or exposed architectural settings.

5. Colour

S355 brackets are supplied in black, anthracite or brown, allowing the metalwork to coordinate with façade colours, window frames or door hardware.

Colour is a purely aesthetic choice and does not affect structural performance.
