About Rod Railing Posts

A rod railing post is a stainless-steel vertical upright designed to carry horizontal rod crossbars between posts, forming a balustrade with an open, linear infill.

The rods pass through pre-drilled holes or fittings in the post, and a handrail sits on top, creating a lightweight barrier that maintains visibility while providing fall protection on balconies, terraces, mezzanines and staircases.

Strofix supplies rod railing post systems in four configurations — flat surface with flat (40×40 mm) post, flat surface with round (Ø42.4 mm) post, stairs with flat post, and stairs with round post — all in AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel with a satin finish.

A standard fitting accessory for the rod-to-post connection is also available separately.

The correct system depends on installation surface (flat or stairs), post profile (flat or round) and the required steel grade.

How to choose a rod railing post

1. Installation surface: flat or stairs

Flat-surface rod railing posts have a straight base for level mounting on balconies, terraces and walkways.

Stair variants have an angled base to follow the pitch of a staircase.

Confirm whether the railing run is level or inclined before selecting — the base angle is fixed and cannot be adjusted on site.

2. Post profile: flat (40×40 mm) or round (Ø42.4 mm)

Both flat-surface and stair variants are available in a square 40×40 mm flat-sided profile and a round Ø42.4 mm tube profile.

The flat profile provides a geometric, contemporary look and pairs with other square-section railing components.

The round profile matches standard Ø42.4 mm tube handrails, elbows and connectors used across the Strofix range.

The choice is aesthetic and does not affect load capacity.

3. Steel grade: AISI 304 or AISI 316

All four post systems are available in AISI 304, and four of the five products (all except one) are also available in AISI 316.

AISI 304 is the standard grade for interior and typical exterior installations.

AISI 316 should be specified for coastal, pool and high-humidity environments where higher chloride resistance is required.

4. Standard fitting

The standard fitting is a small accessory that secures the rod within the post hole, ensuring a tight, rattle-free connection.

It is available in Ø8 and Ø9 mm sizes, in AISI 304 satin.

Order enough fittings to match the total number of rod-to-post connection points across the railing run.
