About Glass Canopies

A glass canopy is a wall-mounted entrance shelter that uses a transparent glass panel as the roof element, providing weather protection at doorways while maintaining natural light and an open visual line.

The glass is carried by a steel or aluminium support system that fixes to the building façade, and the mounting method defines the canopy type: hanging canopies are suspended from above by tension rods, under-supported canopies rest on diagonal brackets from below, and fixed-in-profile canopies slot into an extruded aluminium channel.

Strofix supplies all three types — complete canopy kits on 2, 3 or 4 supports, individual brackets and fixings, loose glass panels, and profile systems — in AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel, S355 structural steel and aluminium, with glass options of 10 mm toughened, 12.76 mm (66.2) and 16.76 mm (88.2) laminated toughened.

The correct canopy configuration depends on mounting type, projection depth, canopy width, glass thickness and material preference.

How to choose a glass canopy

1. Mounting type: hanging, under-supported or fixed in profile

This is the first and most decisive choice. Hanging canopies use stainless-steel tension rods that anchor into the wall above the glass — they suit facades with sufficient structural depth above the entrance.

Under-supported canopies use diagonal brackets below the glass, leaving the area above the door unobstructed — they are the most common choice for residential and commercial entrances.

Fixed-in-profile canopies slide the glass into an extruded aluminium channel that bolts directly to the wall — they offer a minimal, frameless look with no visible brackets or rods.

Choose based on the wall structure, available clearance above the entrance and the desired aesthetic.

2. Canopy width (number of supports)

Width is determined by the entrance opening.

Under-supported kits are available on 2 supports (approximately 1400–1600 mm), 3 supports (approximately 2000–2100 mm) and 4 supports (approximately 2600–2700 mm and wider, up to 3800 mm).

Wider canopies require more supports to distribute the glass weight evenly.

Hanging systems scale by adding additional tension-rod fixing points along the glass length.

3. Projection depth

Projection depth is how far the canopy extends from the wall.

Under-supported brackets are available in depths from 900 to 1300 mm; fixed-in-profile systems offer depths of 1000 to 1250 mm.

Measure the required rain and wind coverage area and select the depth that provides adequate shelter for the entrance.

4. Glass thickness and type

Three glass options cover different load requirements: 10 mm toughened for lighter-duty applications, 12.76 mm laminated toughened (66.2) as the standard for most entrance canopies, and 16.76 mm laminated toughened (88.2) for larger spans or locations with high wind or snow loads.

Glass panels can be ordered with pre-drilled holes (for bolt-through bracket attachment) or without holes (for clamp or profile fixing).

5. Bracket material and colour

Under-supported brackets are available in S355 structural steel (painted in black, anthracite or brown) or AISI 304 stainless steel (satin finish).

Hanging-system components are supplied in AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel with satin finish.

Fixed-in-profile systems use aluminium.

Choose based on environment, corrosion requirements and visual preference.
