About Wire Rope Systems
A wire rope system is a stainless-steel cable infill for balustrades, where horizontal tensioned ropes run between railing posts to form a lightweight, open barrier.
The thin cables maintain visibility and airflow while providing fall protection on balconies, terraces, decks and staircases.
Strofix supplies all components for wire rope balustrades: a Ø4 mm stainless-steel rope in AISI 316 (available in 25 m and 50 m lengths), rope holders that clamp the cable to the post, rope crossbar holders, rope bar holders, and railing terminals that anchor the cable end at the first and last post.
The holders and terminals are supplied in AISI 304 stainless steel with a satin finish, designed for Ø42.4 mm round pipe posts and flat surfaces.
The correct component selection depends on post type, the number of cable runs and the total railing length.
How to choose wire rope system components
1. Rope length (25 m or 50 m)
The Ø4 mm stainless-steel rope is sold in 25 m and 50 m coils.
Calculate the total length needed by multiplying the span between end posts by the number of horizontal cable runs, then adding extra for tensioning and termination at each end.
Select the coil size that covers the total with minimal waste — multiple coils can be ordered for longer runs.
2. Rope holders: by post type
Rope holders clamp the cable to the railing post at each intermediate position.
Strofix offers holders designed for Ø42.4 mm round pipe posts and for flat surfaces.
Multiple holder variants are available — standard rope holders, rope crossbar holders and rope bar holders — differing in clamping mechanism and how they interface with the post.
Match the holder to the post profile and the cable routing of the system.
3. Railing terminals
Terminals anchor the cable at the start and end of the railing run, providing the tensioning point that keeps the rope taut.
Strofix supplies terminals for flat-surface mounting.
Each cable run requires two terminals — one at each end.
Order enough terminals for the total number of cable runs in the balustrade.
4. Rope grade: AISI 316
The rope itself is supplied in AISI 316 stainless steel, which provides higher corrosion resistance than AISI 304 — suited to both interior and exterior installations, including coastal and pool environments.
The holders and terminals are AISI 304, which is appropriate for the non-tensioned structural components.
